Project description
The 4Forests team is leading two Red list species conservation projects in Southern Malawi for BINCO. Firstly, the Chapman’s pygmy chameleon (Rhampholeon chapmanorum) was the focus of a rapid biodiversity survey to gain insight into the distribution and population size of this endemic and Critically Endangered pygmy chameleon. In collaboration with the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM), conservation actions are currently taken on the ground.
Secondly, hidden in the dense afromontane forests on the slopes of Mount Mulanje, breeds a pair of the elusive endangered Spotted ground thrush (Geokichla guttata subsp. belcheri). How many birds are left in Malawi? What threats does the population face? Which conservation actions are urgently needed? We completed a rapid biodiversity survey to answer those questions.
